New Bedford State Pier, New Bedford, MA, 2006, commissioned for the AHa festival, the imagery is based on Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The text, from Fernando Pessoa’s Portuguese Sea is written in both Portuguese and English and reads in full" God placed danger and the abyss in the sea but he also made it heavens mirror."
New Bedford Harbor is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the United States; a city so celebrated for the ‘Golden Age’ of it’s whaling past, sadly is less so for it’s rich commercial, ethnic and artistic present. Time Table was made in public, on the fish pier where l I found myself continually recounting the mariners tale in explanation for what I was doing on that ladder in that rain on their pier. Not an albatross in sight.
