At College of Holy Cross I have students make their final drawing in the main chapel. These drawings are quite large in scale (all at least 36"x48") and made primarily in charcoal. We spend a week making preliminary drawings exploring the idea of sacred spaces and what their relationship to them is. This project requires not just a command of formal drawing structure (perspective, scale, touch, light, etc) but it requires them to address temporal light sources. Finally the drawings inevitably become a reflection of their own relationship to this space, and what they choose to meditate on, and in this way become reflections of themselves.
